How to use the Palette Mixer & Randomizer
- Pick a size and mode. Choose 4, 8, 16 or 32 colors, then a generation mode — Harmonious for balanced hue theory, Monochrome for one-hue ramps, Gradient ramp to blend two endpoints, or Pastel and Dark / Moody for instant mood.
- Roll the dice. Hit

Mixing palettes that actually work
A good pixel-art palette is more than pretty colors — it's a set of relationships. The Harmonious mode picks a base hue and derives analogous, complementary and triadic partners, then walks lightness and saturation up a gentle ramp so you get built-in shadows and highlights rather than a flat rainbow. That ramp is what makes a color palette generator useful for sprites: you want dark-to-light steps you can shade with. For tight retro constraints, snap to the four-green Game Boy set or a strict 1-bit pair and let shape do the work. When you land on something you like, lock the anchor colors and randomize around them to explore variations without losing the parts that already work. Every palette here exports cleanly to Aseprite, GIMP and Krita via the .GPL file or a plain hex list, so you can move from randomizer to canvas in one click. Nothing you generate leaves your browser.
How do I keep a color while re-randomizing the rest?
Click the lock icon on any swatch. Locked colors survive every roll of the Randomize button, so you can pin the ones you love and keep re-rolling only the unlocked slots until the whole palette clicks — the same workflow as Coolors.
Can I export the palette to Aseprite or GIMP?
Yes. Export a GIMP .GPL file, which Aseprite, GIMP and Krita all import directly, or grab a plain .txt hex list that Aseprite also reads. You can also copy the comma-separated hex list, download a JSON array, or save a PNG strip of the swatches.
Are the Game Boy and PICO-8 presets accurate?
The Game Boy preset uses the four documented DMG greens (#0f380f, #306230, #8bac0f, #9bbc0f) and the 1-bit preset is a true black-and-white pair. The NES-like and PICO-8-like presets are hand-tuned sets inspired by those consoles rather than exact hardware palettes, so they're labelled as inspired variants — no false accuracy claims.
Does anything get uploaded when I use this tool?
No. The Palette Mixer runs entirely in your browser. Every palette, edit, copy and export happens on your device — nothing is sent to a server.
